Rarities - local and distant

Over the weekend, we had an excellent two days birding with Stephen.

We started in the mid-afternoon at Frankfield Loch in Glasgow where we managed to see the reported Blue-winged Teal. For those that don't know what it looks like, here is a photo I took in North America.

If you haven't been to Frankfield Loch it is worth a visit as it normally has a good range of birds and, of course, anything can turn up; Pectoral Sandpiper and Osprey have been recorded in recent years!

From Glasgow, we headed north to the Ythan Estuary where we spent the evening birding at 3 different locations - near the estuary mouth, Inch Point and north of the road bridge.

We were rewarded with Little Terns, 3 Spoonbills and a drake King Eider.

The following morning we set off for the Buller's of Buchan and 'seabird city' ..

Here we added Puffin to our year list and had superb views of Kittiwakes, Fulmars, Guillemots and Razorbills on the cliffs and in the water.

The cliffs offered a wonderful spectacle but we couldn't help thinking there were fewer birds than on previous visits.

On the return to the car, we added Tree Sparrow which we found on bird feeders in a local garden!

Leaving the seabirds, we headed further north to the RSPB Loch of Strathbeg Reserve where we were treated with superb views of a Common Tern colony. Other birds seen from here included Buzzard, Dunlin, Lapwing, Gadwall and Shoveler ….

… and close-ups of yet more Tree Sparrows, Goldfinches and a Lesser Redpoll on the bird feeders

Having spent some time at the Visitor centre we drove to the car park for the Fen Hide, although note you can walk.

Walking to the Hide from the car park, we came across a number of butterflies including this Painted Lady ..

On reaching the hide, we had good views over the loch and reedbeds ..

.. and I managed this poor record shot of a distant Marsh Harrier .

.. a nice way to finish our trip.

Thanks to Stephen for all the driving and organising the accommodation.

PS apparently the Blue-winged Teal is still at Frankfield Loch!

Some Breeding Success

Yet more trips around the country starting with a RSPB Glasgow Group outing to the SWT's Reserve Loch of the Lowes.

The Ospreys have bred again ….

Other sightings included Red Kite and at least 3 pairs of Great Crested Grebes on nests.

On the 17th, we visited the RSPB's Loch of Strathbeg with Stephen where we encountered breeding Common Terns, young Tree Sparrows, a Swallow on a nest, Osprey and a Scottish tick - Bearded Tit!

On the 20th back to local birding and a quick visit to Bingham's Pond where the cygnets had moved across the road, with their parents, to feed in the grounds of Gartnavel Hospital.

Meanwhile on the Pond itself there are still 3 juvenile Coot present …

Finally, yesterday a first ever trip to Plean Country Park, with Mike and Judith, in search of Green Woodpecker and we were successful!!!!

So lots of different habitats visited, evidence of breeding success and 81 bird species seen, since my last post.

Birding - near and far

A busy week and lots of miles on the road - thanks to Peter and Stephen - and lots of birds. Indeed between 1 May and 7 May 2017, I saw or heard 116 different species!

Starting on the 1st, we travelled to the Trossachs and Loch Lomond. I concentrated on birding so the camera remained in the rucksack but I found this 'art installation' in the Queen Elizabeth Forest Park intriguing .............

We then spent three days up in north east Scotland. On the Wednesday, we called in at the Ythan Estuary ...

 ........ Bullers o' Buchan .....

... and Loch of Strathbeg RSPB Reserve ..

View from Starnafin Farm Visitor Centre

On the Thursday, we concentrated on the Strathbeg area, visiting the visitor centre and three hides ......

View from the Bay Hide

.. as well as the St Coombs area and Rattray Head .............

The birds were superb and I was pleased to be able to get record shots of Little Gull and Corn Bunting ..

On the Friday we travelled along the Moray coast and then headed home via Lochindorb.

It was back to earth today with a 2 hour visit to Dawsholm Park LNR. The main task was to check the Friends of Glasgow's LNRs nest boxes but I still managed 25 different species.

So 116 species in a week - Scotland's Wilds Better!
